This paper examines the prospects for democracy in Islamic countries, based on the experience of Europe and other regions during earlier democratization periods. The paper examines the factors that might encourage Islamic countries to democratize. It also considers the role of religion in affecting the course of democratization in Europe and the Islamic World.
