California Sea Grant (CSG) is a statewide, multi-university program of coastal marine research, extension and education activities administered by the University of California. CSG's primary mission is to expand the base of scientific knowledge necessary to promote the sustainable use of the state's coastal and marine resources. The first Sea Grant project in California was funded in 1968 to establish an Applied Ocean Sciences Curriculum at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. California Sea Grant was formally designated a Sea Grant "College" in 1973. It is the largest of 30 Sea Grant programs sponsored by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), U.S. Department of Commerce.
