Repository Benefits

There are many benefits to bringing your research unit into the eScholarship Repository, including:

  • Free to the University of California. Your research unit, center, or department is eligible for free access to the electronic publication technology.
  • Promising alternative to commercial ventures or self-publishing. The eScholarship Repository provides a visible, persistent platform for freely distributed research and will reduce the need for commercial products such as the Social Science Research Network (SSRN).
  • Software makes publication and dissemination quick and efficient. The average upload time per paper is less than 5 minutes.
  • Increased visibility of your research and your unit. The repository brings many new people to your content, and to your website. A link to your home page is always available. Over 100,000 full-text paper downloads were logged in the repository's first year.
  • Administrative time savings from software that is easy to use. It automatically creates PDFs, creates and updates links, generates title pages for papers, and creates a citation. Staff can manage working papers easily from any Internet connection.
  • No local IT cost for this CDL-supported infrastructure. Research units need not worry about maintaining software or servers, or transitioning content when switching PCs or servers.
  • Usage reports show traffic for papers, series, and site over any increment of time. This allows you to find out just how many people are reading each paper or visiting your repository site. These statistics are available at any time.
  • Email notification alerts interesed people about new papers. Readers can easily subscribe and unsubscribe to notification lists.
  • Permanence from UCOP/CDL commitment to maintaining persistent access to content housed in the eScholarship Repository. Please note, CDL's commitment to provide persistent access to content in the eScholarship Repository applies only to material housed on servers maintained directly or under contract by the CDL. Links and access to content of any format referenced outside the eScholarship Repository cannot be guaranteed by the CDL or eScholarship Repository.
  • World-wide accessibility via the Open Archives Initiative (OAI). Your content is discoverable from a variety of locations and methods with no extra work on your part.
  • Ability to upload associated content. Post pictures, spreadsheets, Power Point presentations, or any other content along with the paper using the same easy upload process and gaining the same promise of persistent access.
  • Institutional identity of your department, center, or research unit is retained on all materials as they pass from reader to reader. In addition, you can customize your publication series with unique logos, layout, and links.
  • Sophisticated searching makes materials easy for scholars to find. People can search by author, date, keyword; etc.; Boolean and full-text searches are also supported.
  • High-quality participants. Over 100 departments, centers, institutes, and research units in social sciences, humanities, and sciences from the nine UC campuses have already posted a wealth of excellent, diverse research, and continue to add to it every day.
