The LMA encompasses organized research related to both precision manufacturing issues and burr formation in metal cutting. The Precision Manufacturing Laboratory, one subgroup of the LMA, focuses on process modeling, characterization, simulation, and monitoring of precision and ultra-precision applications such as chemical mechanical polishing, abrasive machining, and diamond turning. Research projects aim to advance the fundamental understanding of process mechanisms at the nano or even sub-nano scale. Another subgroup of the LMA investigates phenonmena related to the modeling, prediction, and simulation of burr formation in metal cutting operations. Research is driven by automotive, aerospace, and heavy equipment manufacturing industrial sponsors that comprise the Consortium of Deburring and Edge Finishing (CODEF). Successful technology transfer to industry is enhanced through the customization of burr databases and the development of software tools for process and tool path planning.
