Competitive Equilibrium Without Transitivity, Monotonicity, or Free Disposal
Ted Bergstrom, University of California, Santa Barbara

I was proud of this paper when I wrote it. It had some new tricks and, I thought, the best existing proof of the existence of competitive equilibrium. I sent it to a journal and the referees didn't share my enthusiasm. They did, however, like my trick for disposing of free disposal. I published that part of the story in a later paper called "How to Dispense with Free Disposability (At No Cost).
